The Underground Adventure Chicago Field Museum

Light Perceptions

Project Type: New Gallery Lighting Project
Project cost: circa £95,000 ex VAT and fees
Completed: 1999
Case Study No: 1005

The Underground Adventure was built as a children’s interactive exhibit where the visitor is shrunk to 100th of human size in a “transmogrifier” chamber and then taken through a labyrinth of underground burrows, nests and waterways.

Life size animated exhibits include a biting earwig, splashing crayfish, wiggling worms and spiders. The lighting effects are animated in tandem with the exhibits and sound effects to provide an all-encompassing visitor environment.
